Mount Vettore with its peak reaching a height of 2476 metres, at the Sibillini massif, on the north slope of the mountain and in its basin at a more modest 1941 metres you can find hidden in its glacial cirque likes the Lake of Pilate. This is the only natural lake in the Marche region, hence the many legends that surround it. One of the most pervasive legends claim that the Lake was named after Pontius Pilate’s body had been thrown into it after Tiberius was sentenced to death. There are several hiking trails to reach the summit and the lake, all of which are about a 7 hour round trip. Hiking equipment as well as snacks and water are a must. The first path allows you to drive to Foce di Montemonaco, a small hamlet of the larger Montemonaco, from there you wull have access on foot via a dirt road to the south, crossing the Piano della Gerosa. At the end of the road, continue along a steep path on the left located in a dense natural forest, with steep hairpin bends called Svolte, cross a gully and reach the beautiful slopes of the valley of Lake Pilate. Continue southward until you reach the lake itself. The second route starts from Forca di Presta, which you can access by car, from there you follow the route to reach the top of Mount Vettore and the Tito Zilioli refuge, after which the descent begins to the valley that is home to Lake Pilate.
